My 9-year-old-son loves a challenge. When I received the Perplexus Original in the mail for review, I knew he would immediately want to play with it. I must admit that I was quite eager to try my hand at it as well.
Perplexus is a fun but challenging self-contained maze in a ball. The object of the game is to maneuver a small silver ball through a series of mazes from beginning to end without having the ball drop from the small platforms. It involves hand-eye coordination, skill, a steady hand and a bit of patience. My son assured me he has them all and had a blast teaching himself to complete all three mazes. I, on the other hand, seem to be lacking most of the required skills, as I spent the majority of time laughing at myself as I watched that ball drop off course over and over again. Now that my 5-year-old has also taken to the game, I am finding that my determination to strengthen my skill has definitely heightened.

From a Mom’s point of view, I’d say this is a really fun game for the whole family. It’s self contained so there is no worry about losing pieces or picking up parts and putting them away. The smooth ball is easy to clean and mess free. The game is totally portable, making it easy to bring along in the car, to doctors appointments, to a restaurant or on vacation. I found that when my kids were playing with the Perplexus they were relatively quiet and relaxed. I like the fact that it requires hand-eye coordination as well as a nice dose of concentration.
To put it’s appeal to the test, I have been deliberately leaving the ball on my dining room table. I have found that almost every guest who has been to my home, regardless of age, picks up the ball and begins to play with it. It is definitely a fun conversation starter and appealing to just about everyone. I could definitely see playing this as a family while timing one another’s speed.
