Bubble Guppies and Team Umizomi & Dora’s Fantastic Flight for Nintendo DS {Review & Giveaway}

My 10-year-old son is obsessed with electronics and video games.  When it comes to picking out games that he will like, I have little difficulty figuring out what to buy.  My 5-year-old daughter, on the other hand, well – she is another story.  Over the past few months my daughter has taken interest in her brother’s DS and iPod Touch.  She is itching to learn how to play all of his favorite games, but honestly I feel like she is too young to really enjoy them and she is super girly which poses a challenge when it comes to the “boyish” games he tends to migrate toward. Since the fall, I have been researching games that she may enjoy, so when we were given the opportunity to review a few DS games from 2K play, my daughter was over the moon.

When the package arrived and I told my daughter what it was, she tore it open like a present on Christmas morning.  We were pleasantly surprised to see that both games, Nickelodeon Bubble Guppies and Nickelodeon Team Umizoomi & Dora’s Fantastic Flight were both games containing familiar favorite characters and perfect for preschool and kindergarten aged children.  Both games are rated EC for Early Childhood, which as a parents is a starting point in researching whether the content is safe and appropriate for my daughter.  I recently have been paying special attention to game ratings on all of the games we choose as it certainly helps me quickly weed out games that are not appropriate for my children or family..  You can learn more about this fantastic ESRB rating system HERE.

Bubble Guppies is bright and colorful and contains games that kept my daughter busy without needing too much help.  Throughout the game, Bubble Guppies journey through places like the farm, city and more, kids play games which help them to learn shapes, patterns, number recognition and other educational activities.  It kept my daughter’s attention for 20 to 30 minute spans before she was on to the next game.  I give this game 4 (out of 5) stars for its age appropriateness, educational content and overall ability to keep my daughter entertained.

Moving on to Team Umizoomi & Dora’s Fantastic Flight was another leap of excitement for my daughter.  Since she has been a fan of Dora since age 3, the characters were familiar and engaging.  Once again, this game’s content helped my daughter practice number recognition, problem solving, identifying shapes and pattern completion.  Dora and Boots along with the mighty math heroes Milli, Geo and Bot, go on an adventure to search for hidden objects and collect missing pieces to their cool air ship.  Colorful and engaging, my daughter played with this game about 45 minutes without interruption, which is pretty amazing for my little ball of energy.  I give this game 4 (out of 5) stars as well and I honestly feel that both games would make wonderful additions to your holiday gift list for preschool and kindergarten age children.
