K-Y Intimacy Experiment Day 4: Outside the Comfort Zone

Marriage has this way of making us incredibly comfortable around one another. For instance, Joe has this crazy habit of busting in on me when I am going to the bathroom (as if we do not have two others to choose from in the house). And I am uber guilty of spending evenings on my laptop instead of spending quality time hanging out with him. Our bedroom often becomes a hang out for the whole family; and yes, we have both been guilty of focusing on the TV rather than each other.

At what point did these crazy habits arise? We would have never done these things when we were dating! Cuddling or going to bed without showering or brushing our teeth? YIKES! But like many married couples, we have become so comfortable in each other’s space that we do not even think of how these little habits can hinder some of the spark and mystery that really makes a relationship sizzle.

One thing is for sure, we definitely are going to try to be more aware of our actions around one another. More importantly, I need to learn to put away my laptop and spend more quality time snuggling with him on the couch after the kids are in bed. It is amazing how these little things can bring back sparks that really can make all the difference in a relationship.

On an opposite note, there are things in our relationship that I am not so comfortable with. For instance, I cannot help but try to hide my stretch marks and muffin top when he is around. Maybe it’s a guy thing, but my husband always seems to be much more comfortable in his body than me. I swear he could walk around buck naked all day if it was acceptable to do so. And so when the second part of the exercise called for us to “spend a clothing-optional evening together” I almost fainted. It’s one thing to be naked in the privacy of your bedroom, but to carry that over into the kitchen while cooking? Uh, that’s just plain hysterial.

Let’s just say…it’s funny how much you reconnect when you actually make yourself go outside of your comfort zone. There is something daring and exciting about going ahead with doing something you normally would not do. I can assure you at the very least, it will be great for tons of laughs and certainly will bring out the best of stories from when you were dating.

As for my husband, he wants to know if the next 6 days are going to be anywhere near as fun as today’s experiment. Oh no! I think I’ve created a monster!

If you are interested in participating in your own experiment, the experiment is free and can be found by clicking the K-Y Intimacy Experiment tab on the K-Y Brand Couple’s Page on Facebook. In the mean time, I will be checking in daily to tell you more about my own experiences.
