Thrift Store Finds Thursday: School Uniforms

Last Saturday Goodwill had a 1/2 price sale on all clothing.  Yes – that’s right – even Goodwill has sales!  A few days prior, I headed over to skim the racks to get an idea of what I may be interested in purchasing if it was still available on Saturday during the 1/2 price sale.  I always find that by doing a quick once over a day or two before the sale, I am able to cut back on the need to “dig” for treasures and have a game plan in mind.  I will warn you – the stores get crazy busy on 1/2 price sale days and unless you are there early chances are that you may have trouble finding a cart to tote around with your finds – so be prepared.  Also, if bringing children along, pack a snack and something to keep them busy.  Lines for the dressing rooms get busy quick and it’s always a good idea to have a game plan to keep the kids happy while you are waiting.

I didn’t have much time to shop on Saturday, but I did come home with a small bag of goodies.  The prices were almost too good to believe; I was so glad I had the chance to stop in and browse.  I was envious looking at the shopping carts full of items people were bringing to the register.  Ah-mazing!

One of the things I have been very lucky in finding at our local thrift stores are good quality, gently used (and even sometimes new with tags) school uniforms.  On Saturday, I was lucky enough to grab two Lands End hunter green polo shirts in great condition for just $0.75 each.  Yes – two Lands End polo shirts for $1.50.  My daughter is in need of a few extra short sleeve shirts for the upcoming warmer weather so these were a steal!  I also spotted a ton of Cherokee brand white boys polo shirts in larger boys sizes new with tags (too bad they were too small for my son).

Another great place I have had luck finding school uniforms is at the area kid consignments in the spring and fall, kid consignment stores, and on Freecycle.  I have also been able to swap uniforms with a friend with children of similar gender and age.  Swapping helps to save us both money and we mutually benefit from swapping.

Did you shop the 1/2 price sale at Goodwill last weekend?  What did you find?

  1. I LOVE goodwill! My own kiddos are not in uniforms – but your idea to look there for those who are sounds brilliant. Hoping you and your lovely family are all doing well! xx -monica

  2. I didnt. I was wondering if our outlet was having a sale too?

  3. I didnt. I was wondering if our outlet was having a sale too?

  4. Yes, I think the outlet stores weren’t included.

I wasn’t able to go, and I’m really bummed. I need to get bigger sweat pants for my 9 year old son. Maybe tomorrow I can sneak out for 45 minutes.

  5. I missed out on this sale this time around, unfortunately. I went last time they held it and found some great deals!

  6. I think it’s interesting how the Goodwills in various areas operate so differently from one another. The ones where I’m from label everything with colored tags, based on when they arrive at the store, and each week a new color is on sale for 1/2 off. So there are always clothes (or housewares, toys, etc.) 1/2 off – it’s just based on tag color.

Awesome blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a
paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Appreciate it!

I have been browsing on-line more than three hours today, yet
I by no means discovered any interesting article like yours.
It’s lovely value sufficient for me. Personally, if all site owners and bloggers made excellent content as you did, the internet will probably be much more helpful than ever before.
