Pirate Costume Review

Disclosure: I received my choice of a pirate or superhero costume for review from Tomoson. I received no monetary compensation for this post. All opinions are my own.

With summer here, my family and I have been planning frequent day trips all summer long. With my weekly event calendar chock full of family friendly things do, I have been finding that there has been an abundance of pirate themed events on our summer fun list.  What could be more fun than dressing up to attend them?  Back in June, we attended a Pirate Festival at Tuckerton Seaport in NJ – and it was an absolute blast.  I did pull out a few “pirate inspired” T-shirts for the kids to wear but when we arrived at the event, my kids were both envious of the many fun pirate costumes the other kids were wearing.  My daughter begun asking to purchase one for our next event, so the opportunity to review a pirate costume from could not have come at a better time!

My girl is a girly girl so choosing a costume for her was a no brainer.  We sat down at the computer and browsed every costume in her size. She immediately chose a fun Ballerina Pirate Child Costume. The combo of pirate meets ballerina was right up her alley – and I knew she would love the fact that it had an attached tutu to give it an extra special girly look!

One of the things that I love most about is that they have reviews on their site along with each costume that give honest feedback from other customers. I found these especially helpful when selecting a costume. Based on previous customer reviews, I opted to order her the size Medium (8-10) even though she usually wears a 6/6x. Based on my own experience ordering from BuyCostumes in the past, customer recommendations have been right on target and sizing up has worked great when recommended.  I was a bit nervous as to whether the length would be too long or the shoulders too wide for her but I went ahead with the suggestion of the previous reviewers and ordered up one size.  I figured if it was too big, I could easily exchange it for a smaller size, since offers free exchanges.

The pirate costume arrived neatly packaged and ready to enjoy.  We immediately tried it on and it fit well aside from a bit of shifting in the shoulder area.  I figured by placing a black or white tee shirt or tank top underneath, it would avoid any slipping or mishaps.  I also figured it would be simple enough to pin or tack in the back if needed, giving her the ability to wear it as she grows.  There is nothing better than being able to enjoy a costume for an extended period of time, especially when they grow so quickly!  I found the costume very easy to put on and take off and my daughter was able to dress herself with minimal help.  The material (aside from the tutu skirt) was soft and of good quality and the colors and design were perfect.  She did complain a bit about the tutu, which is made of a stiff tulle material, “feeling itchy”.  This was easily remedied by slipping on a soft pair of leggings and next time I would probably add a tee shirt or tank underneath for even more comfort.  She LOVED it from the minute she laid eyes on it and could not wait to have her picture taken. I was impressed that the costume comes with pretty much everything you need to create an adorable “pirate” look.  The only pieces we added of our own was a pair of leggings and a black pair of shoes.  I loved the little accessories that came along with the costume including the soft stretchy head wrap and little fingerless gloves.  She is already asking to head to the dollar store to find a play sword to complete the look.

No sooner she was dressed in her precious costume, she was hunting down her brother to play pirates with her.  I have a feeling that this costume will be making frequent appearances at our house as well as for themed library events, parties, our planned pirate dinner during our vacation at the shore, on our next visit to the Dark Star Pirate Cruise in Wildwood and on New Years Day as she watches her Dad and brother marching in the Philadelphia Mummers Parade with South Philadelphia Stringband’s 2014 Pirate theme.

I have to say, is such a pleasant and hassle-free way to shop for costumes – any time of year! With its unbeatable selection ranging from infants to adults and plus size as well as a range of prices to fit your budget, you are sure to find something for everyone in one shopping experience.  I highly recommend heading over to their site to check out their awesome selection and deals. You may even find the perfect costume to put away for Halloween or for your little prince or princess to take along on a Disney trip!  You can also follow on Facebook and Twitter for ongoing deals, news and new product information!
