Take an educational walk with one of our knowledgeable volunteers! Discover the 300+ species of birds that use the Refuge during their migration routes – each week guarantee different species!

Ridley 5k Superhero Run

Channel your inner superhero, throw on your cape, and join us for our annual event! Participants will meet at Ridley High School, then travel by bus to the START line at Ridley Area YMCA. The race will FINISH at the high school, where a medal ceremony will take place. Runners are then welcome to stop inside the school for Health Awareness Day! The family-friendly, community-wide event is a partnership between the Ridley Area YMCA and the Ridley Educational Foundation.

Wildlife Photowalks are designed to photograph all kinds of wildlife including birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, insects, wildflowers, etc., while we learn how to do it well and avoid wildlife photography pitfalls. We discuss technique, gear, and essential knowledge about photography and wildlife. A desire to make great wildlife images, and a good camera and lens are all that’s needed, though a lens with an effective focal length of at least 200mm to 300mm is very helpful.
Photowalks will meet in visitor center and be at a relaxed paced on flat surfaces. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. No registration required.

Linvilla Orchards Family Fishing Derby
9 AM – 3 PM
at Orchard Lake at Linvilla Orchards
The Family Fun Fishing Derby provides younger and novice anglers an opportunity to experience the fun of our Fishing Derbies in a less competitive atmosphere.
Orchard Lake will be stocked with over 1,000 trout, which means that all participants will have a chance to catch that special fish. The lucky anglers who catch the first trout in their age groups will receive a special trophy. Plus, there are tagged fish which can be caught to win additional trophies and other great prizes.

12 to 16
17 & over
No fishing experience or fishing license is required. Fishing rods and bait will be available at the fishing site so that even new anglers who don’t yet own fishing equipment can participate. Fishermen can take home their first fish, which is included in the price of admission; additional fish are just $4.99 per pound.

It’s time for Nature Tots at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge! This Saturday, March 2nd from 10am-11am, we will be exploring nature’s “Tracks: Who’s Been Here?” with Ranger Colleen! Spring is just around the corner and the refuge is hopping, running, and stomping with activity! Our Nature Tots will find out just what is living here.
Saturday’s program will be all about animals and their amazing tracks! Indoors and out, Nature Tots will discover some of nature’s creatures. After creating their own take-home track and reading a story, tots will then head outdoors to search for tracks in nature! Be Sure to come prepared for the weather and ready to have some fun with our amazing little naturalists.
