Swarthmore Farmers Market Opening Day
9:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Every Saturday
May 11 – December 7
Central Park
121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore, PA 19081
THE Saturday Morning food, art, and community gathering place!
The market includes a great variety of weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly local food vendors and a rotation of live performers, kids’ crafts, artists, food trucks, and special community and healthy living events.
May 11th Market
THE LINE UP:
Welcome back to our growers! Kneehigh Farm, Berry Patch Produce, Ironstone Creamery, Riverside Blooms, and Davidson Mushrooms. Beechwood Orchards will join us May 18th.
We’re looking forward to the return of many of our vendors, along with some fresh faces. The newbies this Saturday include Linden Dale Farm, a goat dairy farm that will bring, along with other items, goat milk, yogurt, fresh and aged cheese; and Mediterra Olive Oil, with extraordinary olive oil, balsamic vinegar and other delectable and beautifully sourced items. Their family owns and manages an olive grove in Tunisia.
Some of our bi-weekly, monthly, and occasional vendors will be: reflexologist and massage therapist, Donna D. Diakite, Holy Myrrh-Bearers Church pierogies, Market Day Canele, Melmos Dog Treats, Natural Landscaping (will be at the market with their beautiful plants only the first two Saturdays), Nether Providence Soaps, Taste of Puebla, Toscah Bakery (for their only 2019 showing!), and Waffles for Tourettes.
FOOD TRUCK:
The food truck is the delightful and authentic Bonjour Creperie, with their exquisite breakfast and lunch crepes!
KIDS ACTIVITY:
The kids’ activity will be making a flower out of crepe paper for Mom, Grandmom, or anyone else! Kids (and adults) will be able to make reusable bags out of tee shirts, so bring any old tee shirts that want to be reincarnated as a bag – a fun and environmentally supportive activity. By the way, we will have some tee shirts on hand if you don’t have any to bring.
MUSIC:
The market musicians will be two crowd favorites, David Falcone at 9:30 and Herb Mondros & Out of Order at 11:30.
David is a truly talented finger-style acoustic guitarist/vocalist. His original compositions reflect a unique synthesis of Celtic, traditional, and classical sounds and forms. His gorgeous vocal works are often backed with the intricate details blended from these sources of inspiration.
Herb Mondros and his band of renown will be strumming and drumming out folk and protest tunes from many eras.
They will be, as usual, completely Out of Order.
FEATURED ARTISTS:
Our featured artist will be the inimitable Sawdust Siren, led by Bethany Formica and Conrad Bender, with their amazing non-powered amplifiers on wooden bases for smartphone speakers (hence Sawdust Siren), along with other unique handcrafted treasures from repurposed and salvaged lumber.
COMMUNITY GROUPS:
The community groups will be two: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Widener University and none other than The Swarthmorean!
We accept SNAP (food stamps) payments, WIC and senior farmers market vouchers, and FoodBucks, which give recipients $2 to spend on fruits and vegetables for every $5 spent with their SNAP card. We are excited that OneCard will be starting on June 1 (not in May) and then will be accepted every Saturday till the end of the season.
Ample parking on Myers Avenue and in the SEPTA lot and all meters are free on Saturday’s.
Be kind to the planet today and skip the plastic bag! Re-useable bags are available at the market table.

Shearing Day and Fiber Fest at Colonial Plantation
11 AM – 4 PM
On Saturday, May 11th, we’ll be wild for wool, crazy for cotton, in love with linen, and smitten with silk! Join us for an exploration of the plant and animal fibers that clothed the colonial Pennsylvanians.
Visitors to the farm can watch the shearing of our Hog Island and Leicester Longwool sheep, then learn how their wool is cleaned, spun and woven into fabric. See how we make a rainbow of colors from natural dyes, and how we can make cool, breezy linen clothes out of a field crop called flax. Explore the reasons why silk and cotton were equally luxurious and expensive fabrics in the eighteenth century—one from an insect, the other from a plant, but both with a long and troubled history. Take a tour of our farmhouse, which for one day will showcase 18th century reproduction clothing in every room. Check out our lacemakers and embroiderers to see how even the most modest clothing could have personal decorative touches unique to every artisan.
The Plantation’s hours are 11:00am to 4:00pm, with last admission at 3:00pm. Sheep will be sheared at various times throughout the day.
Admission: Admission is $10.00 for adults and $6.00 for ages 4-12 and 65+. Ages 3 and under are free of charge, as are members of the Plantation.
