Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia Introduces Family Friendly UrbanEco Boat Tours on the Delaware River

If you haven’t checked out the Delaware River Waterfront in Philadelphia lately, this is definitely a place to add to your day trip bucket list! There are a ton of family friendly things to do all in a short walking distance, many which are as educational as they are fun!

The newest addition to the offerings at the waterfront include family friendly 90 minute eco-tours conducted on Patriot Harbor Line motor boats. The tours are being offered for the first time this summer by the Independence Seaport Museum . Both interactive and educational, the tours take guests along a leisurely tour of a stretch of the Delaware River.

During this eco-adventure, guests will learn more about the Delaware River watershed and the important role it plays in the local ecosystem. Additionally, guests will find out how the health of the river has been transformed since the passing of the Clean Water Act and learn about easy steps we can take to improve the health of our local waterways. The tour also highlights the importance of local sealife, wildlife and plant life along the river. It’s a perfect kid-friendly engaging educational summer excursion that highlights the importance of why nurturing the environment and protecting the shared water is so important.

My 12-year-old daughter loved the tour and enjoyed asking questions to the staff and guides. The guides were knowledgeable, experienced and interacted wonderfully with the kids on board.  We thought the tour was relaxing and visually stunning.  It was such a fun way to see this part of Philadelphia and the Camden Waterfront from a whole new angle.

Boats depart from the Seaport Museum dock at Penn’s Landing. The dock is attached to the Seaport boat shop at the North end of the marina adjacent to the Hilton Hotel. The Seaport Museum’s street address is 211 South Christopher Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
Please plan to arrive at the dock at least 15 minutes before scheduled departure time. Boats cannot wait for late arrivals.

Yachts have fully stocked bars. Guests are also allowed to bring their own snacks aboard for the trip. The boats have bathrooms and provide protection from inclement weather.

After the tour, there is so many family friendly places along the waterfront to explore.  Head inside at the Independence Seaport Museum to “learn and experience of the Philadelphia region’s waterways through history, science, and art, plus experiences on the water”. The museum is kid friendly and interactive, with plenty of opportunities to keep the kids busy.  Best of all several of our local Delaware County PA Libraries also offer the opportunity to check out free museum passes to visit the Independence Seaport Museum! Contact your local library for details.

Cruiser Olympia and Submarine Bacuna are also right along the waterfront and another awesome experience you can explore and enjoy while you are visiting.  Combo passes are available at the Independence Seaport Museum.

When you are done exploring, the waterfront is lined with food trucks, ice cream and casual spots to chill and nibble with a view of the waterfront.  Spruce Street Harbor Park not only has lots of photo ops, but you can nap in a hammock or play games with the kids in the open play space.

You can rent a paddle boat with the family and enjoy some fun on the water.

Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest

And just a few short strides away, you can visit the RiverRink for roller skating, food, carnival games, mini golf, a ride on the ferris wheel and more! It’s the perfect family day trip!

Parking:
Penn’s Landing has several surface parking lots that cost approximately $20 to park. Another option is to park at the Hilton Hotel. There is also metered parking that is free on Sundays in the vicinity of Penn’s Landing.
