Beginner Scrimshaw Workshop
12 PM – 2:30 PM
at Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation
Scrimshaw was a popular art form in the 18th century. It is a simple art in which designs are scratched into horn, bone, or ivory, and the scratches are then filled with ink or pigment to make them vibrant against the background. Many powder horns were decorated with scrimshaw and it was a popular pastime on sailing ships. You can travel to almost any history or maritime museum to see truly stunning examples of scrimshaw art.
In this class you will learn the basics of scrimshaw and you will decorate a 1″ bone oval which could become a pendant or a key chain–a truly unique and personal work of art! You can design your own image or use one of the images we will have available.
This class is limited to 12 participants and will be held at the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation at 3900 North Sandy Flash Drive, Newtown Square, PA. In the event of cold or inclement weather the class may be moved to the Ridley Creek State Park mansion. Ages 12+ only. Tickets are non-refundable unless the class is cancelled by the Plantation. Warm beverages will be served, but we encourage you to eat lunch before you arrive.
