  • May First Friday at Cherry Street Pier Friday May 7th 4 PM This First Friday will be the best one yet with the debut of two more stupendous exhibitions — resident artist Ed Marion’s Fat Man, Smiling and Pennsylvania Ballet’s Spread Your Wings in partnership with Mural Arts.

    The second Cherry Street Pier exhibition by resident artist Ed Marion is a series of 120 self-portraits made over a 40-year period showcasing Marion in various seasons of his life. Made through good times and bad, they are the residue of the performance of sitting before a mirror and trying one’s best to see who one really is. On display through May 30.

    Pennsylvania Ballet’s Spread Your Wings in partnership with Mural Arts is a dynamic display of photography, video, an indoor mural, and live performances to inspire creativity and personal engagement with dance and storytelling. On display through June 6. RSVP for Opening Night.

  • Family Art Night: Dance & Storytelling Friday May 7th 6:30 PM – 8 PM at Cherry Street Pier

    Enjoy a fun and creative night out with the entire family at our monthly Family Art Night! During this 1.5 hour long workshop on Friday nights, parents and kids will collaborate on art projects and work together to create something everyone can be proud of. This class allows for some quality family bonding time and is a great kick-off to the weekend! This Family Art Night, families will collaborate to create marionettes together!   • Sheep Shearing and Textiles at Colonial Plantation Saturday May 8th & Saturday May 15th 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM 3900 North Sandy Flash Dr. Newtown Square, PA Come to the Plantation on Saturday, May 8th or Saturday, May 15th, and see our rare breed sheep lose their fleece. We will have Eva Mergen, one of our farmers, explain how to shear and then demonstrate the skill by using hand shears. We will also have people demonstrating most of the steps for turning that wool into cloth for clothing, and visitors will have an opportunity to card wool. We will explain how to care for sheep, what they eat, and the advantages of various breeds. There will also be a chance to learn about our other farm animals including our horses, ox, pigs, chickens, geese, and turkeys. There will be hearth cooking, garden, farm, and house tours.   • Science Saturday- Seeds the Day Saturday May 8th 12 PM – 4 PM at Hagley Museum and Library 200 Hagley Creek Rd, Wilmington, DE In cooperation with Longwood Gardens’ Community Read, learn how plants grow from seeds and how birds help them travel. Make your own bird feeder from recycled materials.
    Bonus: This week we’ll be joined by our friends from the Delaware Museum of Natural History who will be providing some extra fun! Create your own biodegradable seed planter and celebrate spring with a special butterfly craft!
    Visitors of all ages are invited to discover solutions to science and engineering challenges at Science Saturday. Activities are included in regular admission and free for Hagley members.
