Victorine’s Valentine’s Day honors the life and legacy of Victorine du Pont Bauduy, daughter of E.I. du Pont. Victorine taught and served as superintendent at the Brandywine Manufacturers’ Sunday School.
In the Wheelwright Shop, make a Valentine’s Day card using the scrap method popular in the Victorian era, wrap a candy bar with your own design to give as a gift to that special someone, and get creative at the hot cocoa bar with whipped cream, chocolate chips, and other tasty treats.
In the Gibbons House, enjoy the smell and taste of sugar cookies freshly baked in the wood-burning stove. Then continue to the Sunday School and meet Victorine and learn a bit about her life. Try your hand using a quill pen to write valentine verses.

Take an educational walk with one of our knowledgeable volunteers! Discover the 300+ species of birds that use the Refuge during their migration routes – each week guarantee different species!
Walk will meet by visitor center and be at a relaxed paced on flat surfaces. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. Binoculars can be loaned from the front desk before the walk. No registration required.

Winter Tree Walk n’ Talk with Jeff Cooney and Robb Kerr

Come learn how to identify trees with Jeff and Robb at this seasonal workshop! This fall, our instructors will focus on learning how to identify tree using bark patterns and other signs found in winter. This workshop will start off in the classroom to examine samples for approximately an hour and then continue on a walk to try your new skills in the field. Dressing in layers and sturdy shoes are recommended.

PECO Family Jams: When We Were Alone

In the One Book children’s book, When We Were Alone, the young character Nósisim describes her grandmother Nókom as dressing “in rainbows.” While working side by side in the garden, Nókom shares her childhood memories from a time when Native children were forced to cut their hair and wear drab school uniforms. Isaiah Zagar, creator of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, shares the Cree’s love of vivid patterns and brilliant colors. In celebration of cultural diversity and self-expression, we will use every color in the rainbow to print on textiles for wall hangings or clothing patches to take home.
Read-alouds of When We Were Alone will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., with family-friendly tours of the Magic Gardens at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to learn more about PMG and its creator Isaiah Zagar.
PECO Family Jams are PMG’s one-of-a-kind, family-oriented programs, featured every second Sunday of the month between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. All PECO Family Jams workshops and activities are FREE with admission

Come hear the story of Madam C.J. Walker performed in costume by actress and historical interpreter, Dr. Daisy Century.
Walker was one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire. She invented of a line of African-American hair products after suffering from a scalp ailment that resulted in her own hair loss.
She traveled the country promoting her products, eventually establishing Madame C.J. Walker Laboratories to manufacture cosmetics and train sales beauticians. She is best remembered for her business acumen as well as her philanthropic endeavors.
